A weekend adventure, entwined with wiki links.

Friday

Rachael and I were going to a show at the Vogue to see Alok so we had to find somewhere to eat ahead of time.

Haraheri is new to us, up several flights of stairs to a top space surrounded by patios.

Had an interesting mix of small plates:

Most unique, that everyone had questions about, was the raindrop cake. That's toasted soybean flour (nutty, like peanut butter dust) and a Japanese molasses. You cut wobbly wedges with the shovel forks and then sprinkle flour and molasses over top.

Plate with a transparent bubble on it, with a bamboo leaf underneath. Two shovel spoons, a pile of roasted soybean flour, and a small glass of Japanese molasses.

Saturday

We went to Doe for coffee that we haven't been to for a while, and then went over to Russian Hall for the happenstance paper goods fest.

Yes, I want to get goose stickers from Geese Goose Media (a co-op!) for something Atmosphere related!

Here’s what I bought from Geese Goose Media geesegoose.ca

A selection of goose stickers and a tiger patch.

We bought bread from Union Market as well as some Pork & Chive Dicky's Dumps. Which seemed kind of pricey at $33 for 30 dumplings ... but that's 3 meals for Rachael and I with 5 dumplings each.

We boiled them for lunch with some pan-fried green beans done with shallots, garlic, some Szechuan peppercorns, soy sauce, and sesame oil.

In the afternoon, we went out again to do early voting, and bought a few things at Choices. Ribena black currant syrup is a thing we have at home for flavouring water now that Welk's doesn't really carry syrups any more.

Rachael and I outside Choices and the Brittania Community Centre showing our voted stickers. Fuck Ken Sims and ABC!

Yes, you should vote. Our Guy, Pete Fry1, for mayor, the One City folks, filled in with some COPE and Green folks is our reco.

For dinner, ended up making some chicken drumsticks and braising a giant kabocha squash in miso.

Sunday

I ended up tinkering more with the Steam Machine and getting it setup so it can host various things. One of which was rebooting the Duck Ramen Wiki.

Duck Ramen Wiki on Lichen Wiki

I'll do more of a post when I have it more setup, but I have imported 1700+ of my old twgroceries notes into using the account - aka Duck Ramen Wiki.

Very much still in flux. My intent is to keep the journal-y / weekend adventure things here on my personal blog -- and in fact import old posts here.

Beacon Bits is pretty great for check ins and lists of venues, so I'll figure out how to go back and forth between wiki mode and link in venues.

Here's the mostly old content for browsing, including my shopping lists:

Duck Ramen Wiki
Food, ingredients, recipes, shopping lists and travel adventures
https://lichen.wiki/@foodwiki.bmann.ca/foodwiki/

I think would be pretty great for private shopping lists and/or I might also try and import the twgroceries archive into Bulleted.

Rongsi Thai Bar & Bistro

The outcome of asking about restaurants around Main at Broadway (we were headed to THIS Gallery) was Rongsi, and I had noted it a couple of times walking past there.

It was great! Kind of high end in the fact that they mostly have individual plates rather than share plates, but still large enough for the two of us to try.

The green papaya salad had soft shell crab legs and crab juice and was too fishy-funky for Rachael but I liked it. Duck confit with red curry was one of the best red curries I've ever had. Shrimp donuts were like mini donuts made out of shrimp which sounds weird but tasty.

I'd like to come back and try this again, with cocktails rather than mocktails (the mocktails were good, too!)

(this has been a test of the Beacon Bits embed an iframe method)

Ended our Sunday with a friend's birthday that was at Parker Street Studios where Rachael has her studio, so we also ended up seeing Melanie Olson's show. I loved this goat.

A lot of my foodwiki talk is pretty much tech talk, so I'll make a separate post about that as I get it setup.
